What a gem report can tell you

A report is valuable evidence. Understanding its scope is just as important.

Read the identification first

Check what the laboratory actually identifies, and match the reference, weight, dimensions and photograph to the stone presented. Not all reports include the same tests or conclusions.

Separate origin from identity

A gemstone identification and a geographic-origin opinion answer different questions. Do not assume that the absence of an origin statement confirms a supplier’s claim. Ask what evidence supports each statement.

Ask for the complete document

Request a legible copy and check it through the issuing laboratory’s official verification service when available. A report is not a valuation, a promise of future value or a substitute for examining the stone.
